Vision Therapy / Training

Dr. Nishida-Eugenio is a Developmental Optometrist who treats children with vision-related reading, learning and behavioral problems, developmental delays and other special needs, including autism spectrum disorders. As the mother of four children ranging from special needs to gifted, Dr. Nishida-Eugenio has a true “gift” for working and communicating with children of all abilities.

Dr. Nishida-Eugenio provides specialized vision examinations and vision therapy in the newly refurbished Developmental Vision Center inside BOC. Vision Therapy treatment programs are performed under Dr. Nishida-Eugenio’s supervision. Each patient’s program is individually tailored to address their specific areas of need. This is usually implemented in one-hour weekly sessions, in addition to home therapy. “Vision Therapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment, utilizing neuro-feedback for the eyes. Based on neuroplasticity studies of the brain, we retrain the brain how to control the eyes efficiently and effectively, with comfort and ease. The results can have an amazing effect on a person’s ability to function” says Dr. Nishida-Eugenio. This is accomplished using a diverse array of instruments, advanced optical devices, prisms, therapeutic lenses and optical filters, dynamic electronic targets with timing mechanisms, as well as computer programs. “Vision has such a huge impact because it is our most dominant sense. 80% of the sensory information that our brain receives is visual and 35 areas of the brain are involved in processing visual information. In fact, according to the National Society to Prevent Blindness, vision disorders are the fourth most common disability in the US and the most prevalent handicapping condition in childhood.”

Clinical research and scientific studies conducted at optometric universities as well as at National Eye Institute’s Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial in 2005, have proven vision therapy to be highly effective in correcting many common visual dysfunctions such as focusing, tracking and eye coordination problems, as well as strabismus and amblyopia. These conditions are so prevalent, that according to the American Optometric Association, 1 in 4 children have an undiagnosed vision problem which interferes with their ability to read and learn.

How do you know if you or your child is struggling with a visual dysfunction? Take the quiz below. If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, your next step is to schedule a comprehensive eye examination by any of BOC’s doctors, in which over 15 visual skills critical to reading, learning and activities of daily living will be tested. Following this evaluation, the doctor can advise whether a Visual Perceptual Evaluation by Dr. Nishida-Eugenio would be necessary. The Visual Perceptual Evaluation would further probe and pinpoint the exact areas and extent of visual dysfunction involved. A parent conference would later be convened to discuss the specific results and to formulate a plan to remediate the visual dysfunctions.
